ASUU Holds Back Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has clarified why it has not commenced a nationwide strike despite months of speculation.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, explained during an exclusive interview with *Nigerian Tribune* that the union delayed the strike to give the Federal Government adequate time to address their demands.

“We chose to delay action to offer the government the benefit of the doubt,” Osodeke stated. “However, despite several months, there has been no concrete progress on our concerns. If this persists, we will take decisive action in early January.”

Professor Osodeke noted that ASUU members are growing increasingly frustrated. “During our November meeting, the leadership appealed to members to allow the government time to address our issues. Unfortunately, nothing has changed since then.”

He confirmed that the union will reconvene in early January to finalize its course of action. According to Osodeke, ASUU does not need to issue a fresh strike notice as required by labor laws, having already done so multiple times in the past.

The ASUU President appealed to Nigerians for understanding if the union embarks on industrial action. “We only resort to strikes as a last option when members feel pushed to the wall,” he emphasized.

Delayed Feedback from the Government:

Addressing the renegotiation committee constituted by the Federal Government, Osodeke revealed that ASUU had concluded its discussions with the committee weeks ago. However, no feedback has been received since.

“So, how long do we keep waiting for resolutions on issues that have lingered for years?” he questioned.
